Currency
Bulgarian Lev (BGN), which is divided into 100 stotinki. All payments should be made in national currency. Banknotes and coins currently in use:
• Notes: BGN 100, BGN 50, BGN 20, BGN 10, BGN 5, BGN 2
• Coins: BGN 1, 50 stotinki, 20 stotinki, 10 stotinki, 5 stotinki, 2 stotinki, 1 stotinka.
The Euro has a fixed exchange rate: 1 EUR = 1.95883 BGN
However, the exchange rate used at banks and exchange bureaus may be slightly different.
Banks
Banks are usually open Monday to Friday, from 09:00 to 17:00. It is best to have your passport with you for you may need it when exchanging currency or cashing cheques. There are also ATMs (Automatic Teller Machines) throughout the city and inside shopping malls.
Credit cards
Major international credit and debit cards such as VISA, Mastercard, Maestro or American Express are accepted at big hotels,car hire offices, most restaurants and all shopping malls.
Electricity
Bulgaria operates on 220 V, two – pin plug system.
Restaurants
Restaurants are open from 11:00 until about midnight, some stay open as long as there are customers. You are not charged for the service in most of the bars and restaurants, therefore it is accepted to leave a tip of 5-10%. In some restaurants, the service charge is specified in the menu and included in your bill.
Climate
Moderate continental with Black Sea influence in the east and Mediterranean in the south.
In October the temperatures may vary between 12°C and 22°C.
